Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis refers to a special test wherein a sample of amniotic fluid is taken from the uterus of the woman to be examined in the laboratory for identifying any serious chromosomal abnormalities in the baby. This diagnostic test determines accurately if the baby is the suspected condition and if the baby’s lungs are mature, particularly in case a caesarean operation is being considered. The chromosomal disorders are detected for Down’s syndrome, Edward’s syndrome of trisomy in the baby. Besides, Amniocentesis also detects neural tube defects like anencephaly and spina bifida. It also reveals if the baby or the mother is rhesus negative (RhD negative).
