Angioneurotic Edema

 

Angioneurotic Edema or Angioedema is a kind of swelling similar to that of hives, however the swelling is not on the skin but beneath it. These hives are also known as welts. They swell at the surface. There is a possibility to have angioneurotic edema without hives.This disorder may be caused as a result of an allergic reaction. While the reaction takes place, the histamine and other chemicals get released into the blood stream. When a foreign substance known as allergen is detected by the immune system, the body releases histamine. The most commonly observed symptom is a sudden swelling under the surface of the skin. Swelling of welts may also be noticed on the surface of the skin.
