Blackhead
Blackhead or open comedo is yellow, whitish or blackish plug or bump on the skin. Blackhead comes under the category of acne vulgaris. It is a common misbelieved that blackheads are caused due to poor hygiene. However, the actual reason for the occurrence of blackheads is the accumulation of excess oils in the duct of the sebaceous gland. The material found in these plugs comprises of keratin and chemically modified sebum (oil secreted by the sebaceous gland). The sebum, when oxidized turns dark. The clogged hair follicles or pores where the blackheads occur, produce the black hue of the blackhead.
