Cerebellum

The cerebellum is an area in the hindbrain which controls the movement and coordination, equilibrium, balance and muscle tone. The cerebellum is located just below the base of the skull, under the occipital lobes of cerebral cortex and above the brainstem. The cerebellum is similar to the cerebral cortex which comprises of white substance and a thin outer layer of gray matter. The cerebellum’s folded outer layer has smaller, compact folds than the ones in cerebral cortex. There are hundreds of millions of neurons present in the cerebellum which are responsible for processing data. It moves the information to and fro between the areas of cerebral cortex and the body muscles which are involved with motor control.
