Cleft Lip picture
Cleft Lip {medically termed as Cheiloschisis} is a kind of defect (a fissure or gap) on the upper lip and roof of the mouth, since birth or in early childhood. Cleft Palate {or Palatoschisis} is another form of birth defect, while both can occur simultaneously and are often referred to as variations of clefting congenital deformity owing to abnormal facial development at the time of gestation. Clefts can also appear on the eyes, nose, ears, forehead and cheeks. Clefts lip or palate can be effectively treated by surgery, often performed by doctors in different stages; the first one at the first year of the baby.
