Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis refers to the inflammation (or swelling) or infection of the membrane that lines the eyelids (conjunctiva) due to an exposure to bacteria or other irritants. Tears generally help in protecting eyelids as it washes away any bacterial deposits in the eye, while they also contain antibodies and enzymes that combat bacteria. Viruses are the leading cause of conjunctivitis, amongst bacteria, chemical exposure, Chlamydia, fungi, parasites, use of contact lenses, allergies and certain diseases. Common symptoms include blurred vision, eye pain, increased tearing, redness in the eyes, itching of the eye, sensitivity to light and crusts forming on the eyelid overnight.
