Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep venous thrombosis or DVT is a term used to describe the blood clot inside one of the major veins such as thighs, lower legs or pelvis. The clot in the vein blocks the circulation of blood from the lower body to the heart. Pain, warmth or swelling can be experienced in the affected area due to the blockage. The clot in the veins can cause irritation known as thrombophlebitis. When the clot breaks loose and travels to the bloodstream, there can be severe complications such as blockage of blood vessels in the lung. It can result in difficulty in breathing and depending on the level of blockage, it can cause death too. This is called pulmonary embolism.
