Geographic Tongue

Geographic tongue is a condition where the tongue appears to be like a map showing irregular patches on the surface. The exact cause for the occurrence of geographic tongue is unknown, however, the deficiency of vitamin B may be involved. The other causes include inflammation from alcohol or irritation from hot or spicy foods. This condition is rare among smokers. The pattern of the patches on the tongue may change rapidly. The change takes place when there is a loss of small, finger like projection known as papillae on the surface of the tongue. The papillae are responsible for making the areas of the tongue flat. The affected areas are said to be “denuded”. The affected areas may last for more than a month.
