Hansen’s Disease

Hansen’s disease, commonly known as Leprosy, refers to an infectious disorder into existence since the biblical era. It is primarily symbolized by abnormal skin sores, progressive debilitation, and nerve damage, caused due to the Mycobacteriumleprae organism. It is comparatively not much contagious with a long incubation period, making it problematic to understand when or where the disease was contracted. Hansen’s disease can be easily caught by children as compared to adults. Tuberculoid and lepromatous are two important forms of the Hansen’s disease that generate sores on the skin, the lepromatous being more severe as it produces large, disfigured bumps and lumps. Symptoms include light skin lesions with reduced sensation, numbness and muscle weakness.
