Heart Picture

The heart refers to a myogenic muscular organ that can be found in animals with all vertebrates (a circulatory system). The primary function of the heart is to pump blood through repetitive, rhythmic contractions throughout the blood vessels. The term ‘cardiac’ is a Greek word that signifies ‘linked with the heart’. The heart of a human body contains 250-350 grams of mass, and has the size of a fist. Enclosed in a double-walled sac known as pericardium to prevent it from overfilling with blood, the heart is situated at the internal side of the vertebral column and external side of the sternum.
