Human Colon

A human colon plays an integral role in the digestive system of the human body. It is a constant hollow tube of about 5 feet long and 2-3 inches in diameter. The human colon constitutes four major parts, viz. ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, and Sigmoid colon. It basically transports wastes to the rectum from the small intestine, where the food still remains but the vital nutrients are utilized by the body. The leftover waste material is passed onto the large intestine, which forms the colon’s first portion. Besides, the human colon absorbs sodium and water from the waste, pushing it through to the next stage. The remaining stool then passes from the colon into the rectum and then out from the anus during bowel movement.
