Hypochromic Anemia

Hypochromic anemia refers to a particular type of anemia wherein the red blood cells or erythrocytes are paler in color than normal. A normal red blood cell has a pallor area at the center of it. In case of hypochromic cells (where hypo means less, and chromic means color) this particular area of central pallor is increased. The reduction in redness can be attributed to uneven decrease of red cell hemoglobin proportionate to the volume of the cell. In a majority of cases, the red blood cells would also be microcytic or small, resulting into a significant overlap under the microcytic anemia category. Common causes of hypochromia anemia are thalessemia and iron deficiency.
