Inferior Vena Cava

The vein that receives blood from lower limbs and abdominal organs and empties into the posterior part of the right atrium of the heart is known as ‘Inferior vena cava’. Also known as Posterior vena cava, it is formed from the union of two iliac veins viz. post cava and vena cava. These veins return oxygen depleted blood to the right atrium of the heart.Placed posterior to the abdominal cavity, it runs alongside of the vertebral column on its right side. Compression of the IVC generally causes health problems. Occlusion of IVC may be life threatening, so proper emergency must be taken.
