Internal Iliac Vein

Also known as hypogastric vein, this vein is formed by tributaries having same course structure as the branches of internal iliac artery. It begins near the top part of greater sciatic foramen, passing behind the internal iliac artery. It joins with the external iliac vein at the brim of the pelvis (opposite to the sacroiliac articulation) to form the common iliac vein. It contains no valves. The vein receives blood from the exterior of the pelvis and also from the organs present in the cavity of the pelvis. Same is done through the hemorrhoidal and vesicoprostatic plexus in case of male, and through the vaginal and utero-vaginal plexuses in case of female.
