Keratomalacia

Resulting from the deficiency of vitamin ‘A’, it is an eye disorder which is bilateral (affecting both the eyes). It leads to the condition of dry cornea. Softening and ulceration of the cornea is also a situation. The vitamin ‘A’ deficiency may be dietary or metabolic. The early symptoms may include night blindness (poor vision at night or dim light). Sometimes eye dryness followed by wrinkling may be observed. Without adequate treatment, increase in the softening of the corneas may lead to corneal infection, rupture (perforation), and degenerative tissue changes, which at last results in blindness.
