Leiomyosarcoma

Leimyosarcoma is referred to as a malignant (non-cancerous) smooth muscle connective tissue tumor. When this neoplasm becomes benign, it is called leiomyoma. It accounts for 5-10% of soft tissue sarcomas that are rare in nature. Smooth muscle cells can be found in most of the body parts, including the stomach, intestines, uterus, skin and the walls of all blood vessels. Thus, leiomyosarcoma can appear at any of these parts of the body, including the breasts. It could either remain inactive for longer duration or recur after several years. It generally does not respond well to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The best treatment is surgery.
