Lepromatous Leprosy

Lepromatous leprosy refers to a particular skin condition characterized by pale macules, owing to the failure of Th1 cell activation required for eradication of the parasite. It is a form of chronic granulomatous disease caused by a Mycobacterium leprae infection. It is only observed in patients with less or no immune resistance to the Mycobacterium leprae organism, due to a lack of Cell-Mediated Immunity (CMI). An early involvement of lepromatous leprosy signifies widespread and badly defined erythematous papules and plaques. If the condition is treated at an early stage, leprosy can be cured; else it may result into a permanent disability or sequelae.
