Leprosy

 

Leprosy, a disease caused by bacteria known as Mycobacterium leprae affects the skin and the peripheral nerves. Genetic and environmental factors, prolonged contact with another leprosy patient are considered to be other reasons for the occurrence of leprosy. The symptoms of leprosy are severe stiffness and dryness of skin, eye problems, severe pain, numbness and weakness of the muscle particularly in the hands and feet.  Leprosy cannot be completely cured but preventions can be taken to avoid complications of leprosy. Reconstructive surgery and physiotherapy are resorted to on early diagnosis of leprosy. The incubation period of leprosy is long where the occurrence of the symptoms itself happens between one to five years.
