Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome
A rare inheritable disorder, Lesch-Nyhan is caused due to the excessive production and accumulation of uric acid in the body. This disease causes arthritis problems, kidney stones, abnormal involuntarily muscular movements and even behavioral problems. Patients with Lesch-Nyhan usually are wheel chair bound and are more prone to self injury. They end up hurting themselves by chewing their finger tips or lips or banging their heads. The symptoms are largely visible and can be diagnosed by the increased level of uric acid in the blood or urine. The success ratio of treatment for Lesch-Nyhan is not very progressive. Counseling for prospective parents with the same family history disease can be helpful to be prepared.
