Lingual Tonsil

 

These are the rounded masses of lymphatic tissue that gives a lump like or foreign body sensation in the throat. It is common type of complaint from the patients. They cover the posterior regions of the tongue. Their lymphatic tissue are dense and surface is covered with stratified squamous epithelium. They also have associated mucous glands.The lingual tonsils after enlarging cause pain and discomfort. Main causes of the enlargement may be infection, reflux, food allergies, abnormal growth or cancer. They may cause unusually sensitive gag reflex. If medication doesn’t work and is continuously bothering the patient, then surgical removal is the best option.
