Berloque Dermatitis
Berloque Dermatitis is a type of skin disorder where patients develop a reddish or brownish discoloration of the skin in the neck area or underarms. This is caused by the use of perfume or cologne on the skin. A person affected by this disorder may first experience reddish tone on his skin before the skin turns brown. This condition may last for many years or even become permanent. A majority of the colognes and perfumes contain oil of bergamot. Bergamot is an extract of the peel of a particular orange that is usually grown in Southern France and Calabria district of Italy. The oil on the skin causes the skin to discolor when exposed to sunlight. If the skin is repeatedly exposed to the sunlight, the discoloration may become permanent.
