Fibrocystic Breast Disease
A fibrocystic breast disease is characterized by lumpy, painful breasts. However, the term ‘disease’ should not be misunderstood as a disease or that the breasts are abnormal, but should be perceived as a fibrocystic change in the breasts. During menstruation, the breasts get affected by hormones formulated in the ovaries, causing the former to become lumpy, swollen and painful. Fibrocystic changes in the breasts affect a majority of women beginning from their early 30s. For painful breasts, medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, use of ice or heat on the breast, or a well-fitted bra would be helpful. Nevertheless, a health care provider should be consulted prior to taking any supplements or medications.
