Hallux Valgus

Hallux valgus (or bunion) refers to the condition when the big toe (called hallux) has a pointed appearance towards the second toe (called angulation), causing a pathological bump on the external side of the toe. This is basically an enlargement of bone or tissue around the joint at the top of the big toe, while the tissues that surround the joint would be tender and swollen. It is commonly found in women, and many a times run in families. If an individual is born with some abnormality in bones of his or feet, he or she is more likely to form hallux valgus. Major cause of a bunion is wearing high heels and narrow-toed shoes.
